Tennis player Katie Boulter
Katie Boulter has fallen from 23rd position to 100th in the world rankings in the current season

Britain's Katie Boulter states she believes she has to "choose between my physical health and my world standing" as the scramble continues for a position in January's Australian Open main draw.

While the typical WTA Tour competitive period is finished, there are still position points to be won in Chile, neighboring countries, multiple sites and France.

The women's entry list for the initial Grand Slam of the 2026 season will be based on the global standings of early December, which could present a challenging situation for players approaching the cut.

Injury Concerns

Ex- British top-ranked player Boulter suffered an hip muscle in her concluding competition of the year in Hong Kong last month, and is now considering whether to play in the WTA 125 Challenger event in Angers, the continental destination, in the initial week of December.

The athlete's recent injury, and the reality she would need to achieve at least several wins in Angers to boost her standing, means she may likely ultimately not competing.

Varying Approaches

In comparison, men's competitors are not confronting the same situation, as for the initial instance the male Australian Open competitor lineup will be established from current week's positions, which is the ATP's official annual-final standing calculation.

The adjustment is aimed at preventing competitors from chasing position points during what is essentially the break period.

Professional Adjustments

This year has been a demanding one for Boulter.

She achieved merely fourteen elite main-draw matches and lately separated with coach Biljana Veselinovic after a lengthy working relationship in which she won several WTA victories.

"Biljana is an outstanding instructor, and an remarkably excellent human as well, which makes things extremely hard," Boulter commented.

The quest for a different trainer is well under way, seeking a professional who has elite expertise as Boulter maintains the belief she can be a world-class competitor.

Professional Aspirations

"Moving ahead with a new coach, one thing I'm very clear on is that they are going to be an individual who has a lot of knowledge in how to succeed to the highest echelon of this sport," she said.

"I've been positioned as elevated as 23 and I believe I can climb back to that position. I don't think my performance has diminished, I think the consistency must enhance.

"My aim is not merely to be ranked 50, 40, thirty, twenty - we've accomplished that. The aim is to be inside the top twenty."
