Cameron Norrie achieved the most important victory of his career by rebounding from a early deficit to beat world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Even though he had previously overcome Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this win marks Norrie's first ever win over a reigning world top-ranked player.

"Massive. So big for me," stated Norrie, who is now the latest British man in the record books to defeat a top-ranked player. "Bouncing back from injury last year, I fell in the first round of qualifiers here. I just aimed to appreciate my performance in the closing months of the year. To get a win like this, it's the biggest victory of my career, my first win over the top player and probably the most confident athlete in the world right now."

The British player, positioned 31st globally, also ended Alcaraz's impressive sequence of nine consecutive finals and 17 consecutive elite tournament wins, which represented the finest stretch of performances in the Spaniard's young professional path.

Alcaraz seemed to be moving confidently towards victory early on as he cruised in the initial stanza. Yet, the British contender gradually worked himself into the match by delivering with greater precision and dragging the Spaniard into lengthy, physical exchanges.
