Car Evading Law Enforcement Smashes into Tampa Bar, Claiming Four Deceased and 11 Hurt
A high-speed car while evading law enforcement crashed into a crowded nightspot in the early hours on Saturday, claiming the lives of 4 individuals and injuring eleven in a historic district of Tampa, known for its entertainment scene and visitors.
An air patrol team with the Tampa police department observed the car operating dangerously on a freeway at about 12.40am after police said the light-colored car had been observed street racing in another neighborhood, according to a police department statement.
The state highway patrol caught up with the vehicle and tried to execute a maneuver that involves striking a back fender of a fleeing vehicle to make it to spin out, called a pit, but it was unsuccessful.
Highway patrol personnel “ended pursuit” as the vehicle raced toward the historic downtown area near downtown, Tampa authorities said. Eventually, the driver lost control of the car and struck more than a dozen people outside the establishment, police confirmed.
Three individuals perished at the scene and a fourth person succumbed at a hospital. By the next day, a fifth casualty was hospitalized in serious state, and 8 additional victims were being cared for at local hospitals but were listed as not critical, police said. Two other individuals sustained minor harm and declined medical aid at the scene. All 15 victims are adults.
“What happened today was a pointless tragedy, our hearts are with the families of the deceased and everyone who were affected,” the local top law enforcement officer expressed in a statement.
Officers identified the suspect as 22-year-old the individual, who was booked on the weekend and is being held at the local detention facility.
Court records showed the suspect has been accused with 4 charges of reckless driving causing death and four counts of aggravated evading arrest with serious bodily injury or death. All are first-degree crimes. Legal representation was listed for Sampson.
“Our entire city is mourning the tragedy,” said the city’s mayor, previously served as the city’s first female top cop, in a message on social media.
“Our condolences are with the victims and families. The investigation into this crash is ongoing, and we are working to obtain answers,” she wrote.
Lately, some states and municipal authorities have advocated to limit the use of high-speed car chases to protect both civilians and police. Following a rise in fatalities, a recent study supported by the US justice department called for law enforcement pursuits to be rarely used, explaining that the risk to suspects, officers and onlookers often outweighs the urgent need to apprehend a suspect.
Still, the state has intensified efforts on the methods, with the state’s road police revising its guidelines to relax restrictions on the application of car chases and pit maneuvers. The justice department-backed analysis characterized those tactics as “high-risk” and “controversial”.
