Eric Adams to Endorse Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race
New York City Mayor Eric Adams revealed his decision to support Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming election for mayor, despite months of disagreements between the pair of Democrats.
A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism
Just last month, the mayor had publicly condemned Cuomo, labeling him a “snake and a untruthful person” and accusing him of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Nonetheless, in a new development, Adams reversed course, announcing he now intends to support the former governor in areas where he maintains significant backing.
“I think that it is imperative to energize the communities of color that have suffered from gentrification on how critical this election is,” Adams commented.
He added, “They have watched their housing costs rise due to gentrification and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and I plan to visit to those communities and speak one on one with organizers and groups and I will appear with the governor in those areas and get them engaged.”
Election Landscape and Recent Events
The mayoral contest has so far been dominated by the struggle between Cuomo and progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose growing support has attracted attention internationally and symbolized hopes for a revitalized leftwing of the Democratic party.
In a latest candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate his conservative opponent declared they would reject Adams’s endorsement if offered.
Earlier this year, Adams had launched his bid for another term as an independent after facing federal corruption charges which were later thrown out in return for Adams’s cooperation with federal immigration raids across the city.
During a unrelated press conference on the same day, Adams answered reporters inquiring into the endorsement plan by saying, “I'm meeting Andrew later today.”
This development came a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's first game at Madison Square Garden, which took place right after a heated candidate debate.
