US air traffic controllers are increasingly seeking second jobs and reporting ill, as they remain on duty unpaid amid the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has announced.

"These professionals are becoming strained," the official told Fox News on the weekend, as certain aircraft were halted on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

After the federal closure on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are considered critical staff, were told to keep doing their jobs without pay.

But a number have been absent, leading terminals to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has added to delays due to climate and additional factors.
