Powerful winter winds caused walls to collapse onto flimsy shelters housing people displaced by war in Gaza, claiming the lives of no fewer than four individuals. This tragedy highlights the perilous situation that continue after over 24 months of intense bombardment and severe shortages of humanitarian assistance.

Truce Provides No Respite from Harsh Elements

While a truce has been active from October, aid groups state that Palestinians broadly lack the adequate housing required to survive frequent winter storms.

Medical staff at Shifa hospital, which took in the victims, said on this week that the dead were two women, a girl, and a male adult.

In a separate incident, the local health authority stated on Tuesday that a one-year-old boy succumbed of hypothermia overnight.

"International actors has allowed us to witness death in every possible way," stated Bassel Hamouda following the funeral. "It’s true the bombing may have paused for now, but we have witnessed every conceivable cause of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Buried in Tent Collapse

According to Shifa hospital, three members of a one household — elderly Mohamed Hamouda, his teenage relative, and his daughter-in-law — were fatally injured when an eight-metre tall wall fell onto their dwelling in a coastal area of the city. At least 5 additional people were injured in the incident.

Family members on that day started clearing the debris that had entombed their loved ones and reconstructing the temporary homes for those who remained.

Aid Distribution and Continuing Crisis

The UN and its aid organization allies were handing out shelter kits, tarps, warm covers and clothes as well as food and sanitation items across Gaza, stated the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs.

The majority of Palestinians reside in improvised tents because their houses were turned into ruins over the course of the hostilities. Aid groups say an insufficient amount of shelter materials are entering Gaza during the truce.

Fatality Numbers Since the Truce

The Gaza health ministry, which is part of the Hamas-run government, reports over four hundred and forty individuals have been killed by gunfire and their remains taken to hospitals since the ceasefire went into effect. The authority maintains detailed fatality data that are seen as largely accurate by international bodies and outside analysts.

A spokesperson for UNICEF, representing the UN children's fund, stated on that day that at least 100 children below eighteen years old – 60 boys and 40 girls – had been lost their lives after the truce began because of armed actions, including unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, air raids, tank shelling and employment of live ammunition. These numbers, he said, represented cases where enough details had been gathered to justify documentation, but the total toll is expected to be greater. He added that many hundreds of minors had been wounded.

"While 'bombings and shootings have decreased' during the ceasefire, they have not ceased," Elder informed journalists at a press conference in the Swiss city by video link from the Strip. "So what the international community now terms calm would be considered a crisis in any other place," he concluded.

Third Winter of Hardship

Gaza’s population of more than 2 million people has been struggling to fend off the cold weather and bad weather away while enduring shortages of humanitarian aid and a lack of more substantial transitional shelter, which is urgently needed during the winter months. This marks the third cold season after the war between the state and Hamas started on 7 October 2023, when militants stormed into southern Israel and killed approximately twelve hundred people and took hostage 251 others into Gaza.

The local health authority reports more than seventy-one thousand four hundred people have been fatally injured in Israel’s military campaign.
