New Year's Revelers Advised to Dress Warmly with Wintry Weather Predicted Across the UK
Weather experts are saying a chilly commencement to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely across much of the UK. Those celebrating are advised to bundle up as bitterly cold temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.
Festive Events Continue In Spite of Warnings
Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are expected to take place, following last year's postponement. This proceeds amid yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be needed," said the Met Office.
Celebrations Under Clear but Frosty Skies
Across the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with dry conditions and open skies. Temperatures are expected to be chilly, making warm wraps a necessity, said forecasters.
To the north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to impact visibility for watching fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.
Extensive Advisories for New Year's Day
As we enter Friday, snow alerts are in place for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

Readings Expected to Drop Further
With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are expected to plummet as snowfall and high winds are expected to affect the north of the country.
Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Health Advisories Issued
At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
