The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary style architect behind many legendary styles associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his defined forms and theatrical styles, such as the soft-colored suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
His passing follows less than a month after he presented his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting body-hugging looks established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as various looks for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
