A comprehensive search and rescue operation is currently in progress in the Caribbean waters for a duo of unlocated sailboats loaded with aid cargo en route from the Mexican coast to Cuba.

Maritime Search Operations Launched

Mexico has deployed navy personnel and reconnaissance aircraft to locate the two vessels, which were carrying at least nine crew members, according to a official statement.

The boats had been projected to arrive in Cuba's capital on the early part of the week, but there has been no communication from them and no official word of their docking, the statement clarified.

Background of Aid to the Nation

The island nation has relied heavily on aid convoys from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the country endures repeated national electricity failures.

"Both captains and crews are seasoned mariners, and both vessels are equipped with proper navigational gear and emergency beacons," a spokesperson associated with the mission commented.

The nine-person crew are citizens of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexico said it has been in touch with rescue coordination centers from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.

"Our team is co-operating fully with the relevant authorities and continue to be hopeful in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the spokesperson added.

Previous Relief Delivery

Just days before, the Cuban government widely celebrated and greeted with fanfare a separate vessel that had carried 14 tons of humanitarian aid to the nation.

That boat, dubbed "a modern Granma" after the vessel in which Castro came back to Cuba to start the revolution in the 1950s, brought solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, baby formula, cycles and provisions.

Wider Political Climate

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have been at the forefront of attempts to deliver humanitarian aid to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, a period which saw a fuel embargo on the island nation came into effect.

Global bodies have since highlighted ""critical" shortages of supplies, with over 50,000 surgical procedures cancelled in Cuba due to energy rationing.

Political measures have intensified lately, with statements from various leaders highlighting the delicate situation regarding relations.

Reacting to previous statements, a prominent government figure stated firmly that "the political system of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Reports suggest that early stages of negotiations commenced, although their ongoing development remains not publicly known.

The naval forces affirmed it was pledged to using all of the resources at its command to locate the sailboats and secure the security of the crews.

To date, there has been no official comment on the missing boats by the Cuban government.
