UK Ready to Employ Frozen Russian Assets to Support the Ukrainian War Effort
The United Kingdom is ready to advance with using the entire amount of seized Russia's funds to aid the Ukrainian defense operations, Leader Sir Keir Starmer has stated.
In a collective announcement, the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, and Germany asserted that this unified step would increase strain on Russian President Vladimir Putin and compel Russia to come to the table.
They clarified that the decision would be carried out in strong partnership with the America.
British sanctions have blocked more than £25bn of Russia's resources since the Russian government initiated its widespread offensive against Ukraine in 2022. Yet, until now, resources sent to the Ukrainian government using Russian holdings had only been sourced from profits and interest generated on them.
Sir Keir informed President Volodymyr Zelensky that the Britain, France, and the Federal Republic of Germany were aligned in their goal to push forward toward employing the total worth of the seized Russia's state funds to conclude the conflict.
He noted that further restrictions soon would increase the strain on Moscow.
This announcement is subsequent to European leaders met in Copenhagen last week to debate utilizing immobilized Russian holdings for a €140 billion loan to the Ukrainian nation.
In the previous month, American leader Donald Trump encouraged international partners to confiscate or employ seized Russian funds, based on reports.
The value of immobilized Russia's assets in the European Union is assessed to be approximately €211bn.
President Zelensky encourages UK's Sir Keir Starmer to join the Purl program
The Russian government launched extensive bombardments throughout Ukraine on Friday, causing power cuts in many areas of Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, and multiple additional areas.
Several persons were fatally injured and at least 20 people were wounded in the assault, authorities in Ukraine said.
In a update on social media after the incident, Zelensky stated that the premeditated assault targeted public and utility structures.
"The necessity is not just talk but firm measures - from the America, Europe, and the G7 - in delivering air defence systems and implementing restrictions," he emphasized.
"Every sanction decision weakens Moscow's military apparatus," Zelensky wrote, in a separate post.
Also on Friday, Zelensky told reporters he would encourage Sir Keir to participate in the Purl program, under which partner nations acquire weapons from the US to give to the Ukrainian forces.
While commending the United Kingdom's firm backing for Ukraine, he said it should send a clear signal that it would participate in the initiative, as well as impose additional measures on Moscow.
