US Commits a Major Aid Package, Delivering a Direct Warning to United Nations.
With an announcement that combines generosity with stringent conditions, the United States has pledged $2 billion to support United Nations emergency relief operations. But, this aid was accompanied by a direct admonition for the global organization: it must "change or face irrelevance."
A Major Announcement During Wider Funding Cuts
This commitment was declared against a backdrop of major cuts in US support of global aid. Additional reductions are expected from other key donors including the UK and Germany.
