Vince Gilligan Discloses He Knows How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... At the Moment.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
Now that Season 1 of the hit program wrapping up—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.
On the Tremendous Audience Reaction
Anyone might to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and online debates about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to avoid both.
“It's like being constantly eating your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We don't try to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.
The Big Question: Does Vince Gilligan Know the Ending of Pluribus?
Considering Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by fan response, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… with some caveats.
“We have some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” he states. “but we are always ready to throw out a decent plan for a better idea. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Alternatively, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.
“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Then again, why not reference the classics?
“I want Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
